Data Center: JNL buys land for data center
Lansing property on Seager St. will house $26.3M facility
Jackson National Life Insurance Co. has purchased property in Lansing for its planned $26.3 million data center. The insurer closed the deal Wednesday. Last week, the Lansing City Council approved $5.5 million in tax incentives for the project.
The incentives still need state approval, said Bob Trezise, president and CEO of the Lansing Economic Development Corp.
“This is a great investment for the city of Lansing and state of Michigan because Jackson National is a work horse as far as producing jobs for our city,” Trezise said, adding that the data center will help support the overall company.
The project will retain about two dozen information technology employees with an average yearly salary of $65,000.
The data center will house computer servers and other equipment to process information for JNL and its parent company, United Kingdom-based Prudential PLC.
“As the company continues to be successful, that means there’s more data, more resources and infrastructure to support, so it just allows us to continue to grow,” said spokeswoman Annie Topie.
JNL will renovate a 31,700-square-foot warehouse formerly occupied by Combined Van Lines Inc. at 2005 Seager St. It will spend the $26.3 million on site clean up, security, equipment and other preparation work.
Employees will move in sometime in late 2010, Topie said. The company would not release the property purchase price.
Pending state approval, the company will receive $1.4 million in brownfield redevelopment funds to offset renovation costs. It also expects a personal property tax exemption worth about $4.1 million.
JNL’s headquarters is near Okemos Road and Interstate 96 in Alaiedon Township. It is based in Lansing because of an agreement in which the township and city share taxes.
