Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance has hired a contractor to develop the site of the iconic, 45-year-old Daily Breeze building on Torrance Boulevard, which will be razed to make way for new medical office buildings.

The hospital – which purchased the property in 2007 – hired DASCO, a medical real estate developer, to complete the work. A construction date has not yet been determined, officials said.

The newspaper moved out in 2009.

The site will be developed into a 106,000-square-foot medical office building with a 450-space parking garage, and a 68,000-square-foot medical office building with its own 340-space parking garage.

The buildings will provide needed space for more physicians to accommodate an aging population and space for more patients, officials said. Several hospitals in the Los Angeles area have closed over the last five years.

The project, which will include environmentally-friendly elements, will provide needed jobs and infrastructure in Torrance, said Mayor Frank Scotto in a statement.

“In light of our challenging economic situation, news of new construction shows us the resilience of our local economy,” he said.
