Healthcare: Saginaw council approves plans to support $2.5M medical office

SAGINAW — The City Council today signed off on a brownfield development plan that could pave the way for a $2.5 million medical office on Washington near the downtown area.

The measure means investors at Midwestern Surgical Associates, 999 S. Washington, may move across the street from its current location after building a two-story, 22,000-square-foot facility, an officials said.

Gary Glaza, chief financial officer of Downtown Area Development, which finances Midwestern Surgical Associates, said the group plans to dedicate about 14,000 square feet of that space to moving the operations while leaving the remaining 8,000 square feet for an undetermined tenant.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to develop a good portion of that block,” Glaza said.

He said the construction will involve tearing down two abandoned buildings on the eight-parcel block of land bounded by South Washington, South Franklin and Holden. A resident also lives on the block, but that home is not included in the plans, he said.

Glaza did not indicate when construction would finish, although officials say crews could break ground this year.

Officials say the move is prompted by expansion plans by Gateway Financial — also a tenant in the Garber Management Group complex at 999 S. Washington — which plans to eventually occupy the offices where Midwestern Surgical Associates operates today.

The brownfield plan would earn $246,000 in state tax credits for Midwestern Surgical Associates to build and relocate to the new location.

Midwestern Surgical Associates moved from Saginaw Township into its existing South Washington offices in 2008. Dr. Samuel J. Shaheen is one of the investment group’s partners and a surgeon at the offices.

The council met at noon today as part of Student Government Day, when regional high school students attend the gathering. The council typically meets at 6:30 p.m.
